Salers polled cattle

The magnificent horns of the Salers are impractical in modern farming systems, and for over ten years, we have been running a specific breeding program to produce polled Salers, based on fullblood poll genetics imported from North America.
Rigel Othello Poll ET, one of our current stock bulls, is by KK Polled Express, and in addition to producing outstanding calves, has had a successful show career, winning Male Champion twice at the Great Yorkshire Show.  Othello calves have found great success in the UK, taking top prices at breed sales and twice winning the Premier Sale Championship, most recently in 2007 with the black polled bull, Rigel Heston Poll.
Othello progeny have been exported to Germany and France (as the foundation stock for polled Salers there).

To promote the Salers breed, we have been showing our cattle since 1995, and Rigel bred cattle have won the Supreme Championship at the major shows on many occasions. Rigel Cordelia was the Overall Beef Interbreed Champion at the Royal Lancashire Show in 1997, and remains the only Salers female to have ever won a major interbreed competition in the UK.  Cordelia's sire Bruno was the first Salers to win a major Beef Interbreed Championship, back in 1989.  Ten years on, Cordelia's grand-daughter, Rigel Mithril (by Sagitaire) was Supreme Champion Salers at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2007.  She went on to achieve the top price of 3700 guineas at the Salers Society Premier Sale in November 2007.

In 2008 another Sagitaire heifer topped the female trade at the Premier Sale, when Rigel Colleen was sold for 3350 gns.

In 2009 Sagitaire progeny topped the Salers Society Spring Sale at 5000 gns for Rigel Peregrine, and topped the female trade at the Spring Perth Bull Sale (Rigel Amelie at 2000 gns) and again at the Autumn Perth (Rigel Lolita at 3000 gns)

Rigel Pedigree is a family partnership comprising Terence and Jane Pye, and Malcolm and Gill Pye, farming at Middleton-on-Leven on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors in the UK.  Having previously run commercial sucklers, we bought our first Salers heifer in 1990, and have grown from this to having 140 cows, split into four pedigree Salers breeding programs, plus a 10 cow pedigree Charolais herd.  We also ran a herd of Salers & SalersX sucklers put to the Charolais, fattening the calves ourselves and selling directly to local quality butchers but we dispersed this in 2008 to concentrate on pedigree breeding.

The Rigel herd has been founded on the principle of using the best bulls from the French Herdbook Society's Bull Test Station.  The foundation cows are by Bruno (Champeix) and Crocodile Dundee (Trapenat).
In 2002 we secured Sagitaire (Tafanel) against strong bidding from French breeders at the Test Station Sale, and in 2006 we had to again pay the top price to secure Amazonien (Freyssinier). In 2008, the competition for our chosen bull was such that we set a 27 year centre record at the sale to secure Casimir (Valmier) for our breeding program.
